La Cuchara de la Navidad (The Christmas Spoon) is a piece-artwork designed and produced for the book Barcelona Nadal Creació de Talent, published by Off Barcelona in 2022. The brief was to create a work about the personal meaning of Christmas in Barcelona, alongside 20 other creative minds.
The piece is a device built from three separate spoons joined to an oak structure salvaged from the workshop of sculptor Antoni Yranzo, my father. This tool works as a metaphor for the act of eating: we can speak of nourishing ourselves, of carrying food from utensil to mouth, but inevitably we are also speaking of pleasure, ritual, art, beauty and, ultimately, interdependence.
Because there is no such thing as a solitary spoon. Every act of eating is collective, connecting us with others, with tradition and with the land. La Cuchara de la Navidad sends a message we shouldn't forget: if you want the treat in your mouth, you'll have to collaborate.
A reflection on how Christmas rituals remind us that sharing is the true feast.
